“Do I qualify if I only need to lose 20 pounds?”

Every ad you've seen shows someone a hundred pounds down. So it's a fair question, and almost nobody answers it honestly. Here is exactly how it's decided.

The short answer: often yes — and there is a good chance you've been talking yourself out of asking. Eligibility is decided by your BMI and your health history, not by how dramatic your before-and-after would look. Plenty of people who qualify are 15 or 20 pounds from where they want to be.

The rest of this page is the actual criteria our providers use, written out. A licensed provider still makes the decision — but you should be able to see the rules before you spend two minutes on a form.

The three ways people qualify

Lane 1

BMI 28 or above — you're eligible

No additional condition needed. For a lot of people carrying 20–30 extra pounds, this is already you and you may not realise it. At 5′6″ that's about 174 lbs; at 5′10″, about 195.

Lane 2

BMI 24–27.9 — eligible with one qualifying condition

This is the lane most people in your situation land in. You need one weight-related condition from this list:

That last one catches more people than they expect. If weight problems run in your family, that counts.

Lane 3

BMI 18–23.9 — maintenance and continuation only

If you've already lost the weight on a GLP-1 and want to hold it, or you're continuing on a low or micro dose, there's a lane for that. It is not a starting point — it's for people already on the other side of the work.

Two things we're upfront about. A BMI under 18 is not eligible, full stop. And we do not treat anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes — that care belongs with your own physician, and we'd rather tell you now than after you've filled in a form.

About $100 a month

If you qualify at a starting dose, a 60 mg tirzepatide supply is $599 and typically lasts around six months at 2.5 mg a week — roughly $100 a month. Higher doses use it faster; we tell you the milligrams so you can do that math yourself.

No membership fee. No subscription. Nothing auto-renews. You buy a supply once and reorder when you're ready. Most telehealth services charge $69 to $149 every month just to remain a customer, on top of the medication.

What happens if you're not sure

The assessment is free and takes about two minutes. A licensed provider reviews it and decides whether treatment is appropriate for you — not a quiz, and not us. You pay nothing until a provider approves you, and if they don't, you're not charged at all.

So the honest answer to “is it worth finding out” is that finding out costs you two minutes and nothing else.

Questions about qualifying

The criteria providers actually use, written out.

What BMI do I need to qualify for a GLP-1?

At Red Lion Clinic there are three lanes. A BMI of 28 or above is eligible on its own, with no additional condition needed. A BMI of 24 to 27.9 is eligible with one weight-related qualifying condition. A BMI of 18 to 23.9 is maintenance and continuation only, for people already on the other side of the work rather than a starting point. A BMI under 18 is not eligible.

What counts as a qualifying condition at BMI 24 to 27.9?

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, PCOS, heart disease, joint pain related to weight, or a family history of weight-related health issues. That last one catches more people than they expect: if weight problems run in your family, it counts.

Can I qualify if I only need to lose 20 pounds?

Often, yes. Eligibility is decided by BMI and health history, not by how dramatic a before-and-after would look. For many people carrying 20 to 30 extra pounds a BMI of 28 or above is already the case without them realising it. At five foot six that is about 174 lbs, and at five foot ten about 195 lbs.

Do you treat people with diabetes?

No. Red Lion Clinic does not treat anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. That care belongs with your own physician, and we would rather tell you now than after you have filled in a form.

I have already lost the weight. Can I continue on a low dose?

Yes. That is the maintenance and continuation lane, for people at a BMI of 18 to 23.9 who have already lost the weight on a GLP-1 and want to hold it, or who are continuing on a low or micro dose. It is not a starting point.

Who decides whether I qualify?

A licensed provider, after reviewing your assessment. Not a quiz, and not a number on a website. The assessment is free and takes about two minutes.

What happens if I am not approved?

You are not charged. You pay nothing until a provider approves you, so finding out costs you two minutes and nothing else.
